Katawa Shoujo

Katawa Shoujo – http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/

Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends—and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right. There are five main paths corresponding to the 5 main female characters, each path following the storyline pertaining to that character.

The story is told through the perspective of the main character, using a first person narrative. The game uses a traditional text and sprite-based visual novel model with an ADV text box.

  1. Hello cpl_crud.
I’m university student in S.korea. I feel so much affection in this “katawa shoujo”. i really fascinated by this game. i really want to translate this game
If 4LS’s allow, i would translate. but i couldn’t found “way of ask to admin.” please help me. please mail to me

  2. I read “Misha Path”, pretty much spent 5 minutes after that looking for a subscribe button. I have some time off tommorow, I’m gonna spend it by reading the hell out of this blog =]

  3. First of all, excuse me for my bad english. It’s not my native language.
I played Katawa Shoujo few weeks ago… I’m a girl, so I obviously found a bit weird experience at the begining for playing a visual novel ‘for boys’ (If I can call it this way). But, oh my God, I think that is the best game I ever played…
I followed Hanako’s route, why? Well, I really like the look of this character, and the second reason is because a friend of mine told me that I really was like her.
And he was right. Physically and emotional. (I don’t have scars or stuff… Well, I do have, but in my wrist, not in my face…)
I don’t think you’re interested in that, but I must tell you.
I’m shy, as well as Hanako, maybe not so bad, nor I have social anxiety, but yes without social, I have anxiety, since I was a child, and right now… I got a depression… So I feel identified of Hanako with most of her thoughts in the game…
I must tell you, thank you. Thank you for doing such a great work. I really enjoyed Katawa Shoujo, I laughed, I cried… I just can’t write a reminiscence of what made me feel, but it’s amazing. Thank you.
Katawa Shoujo helped me a lot.

  4. Dear Cpl_crud,

It’s 3.00 am in France, my english is perfectible, and I discovered this blog, read some of your Katawa Shoujo fanstory. You make me cry, again.

Hanako’s path is my favourite route of the 4Leaf Visual Novel. It’s also my first because something in Hanako tempted me since the first word I read about here. She was a mysterious character, and I loved it. I passed by the neutral ending, by the bad ending, and finally by the good ending. I was a zombie the entire week after reading this path for the first time. I have many common points with her (and Shizune, I’m half-deaf) so I did have the impression of reading myself at some moments. Fortunately, I’m not Hanako, but that touched me right into my heart.
One year later, I continue to discover many things about Hanako and Katawa Shoujo in general. So, to the 4Leaf Studio and particulary you : Merci pour toutes ces heures de lecture. I will read your other novels as soon as possible.

  5. Kinda sad some of this stuff wasn’t made official; even then I loved this VN; not really had the feels but I enjoyed the characters and the implications of not following each route/not everybody gets a happy ending kinda thing.

  6. Hi there just dropping by! I have played Hanako’s route twice now and she is by far my most favorite character but for some reason I have noticed her story in the storyline does not exceed far. I would say the scripting was brilliantly layed out, it wasn’t rushed but her time together with Hisao on the timeline came short compared to the others. Making this journey a short one. I only wished it could have been fleshed out a bit longer on the timeline having more time to spend together or interaction with her past or Hisao’s past. It felt like I was watching “Frozen,” it was good but everything happened over night. Lol overall I love your work and will continue to stalk you. Thanks for being awesome!

Also I would love to see another game from 4LS! And if needed I would pay big money just to watch you guys make magic again! It doesn’t need to be a sequel just another game with the same feels to it.

P.s. Did you write the H-scene? If you did… Brilliant. 😀

    1. Hi, thanks for playing the game!

Unfortunately there isn’t a new game, but in a couple of weeks I’ll be releasing my first novel. It’s more scifi than teen romance, but all the same!

I wrote the original version of the H scene, but I’m pretty sure Suriko changed it a lot.

  7. It makes me happy to find these messages, fictions, comments, art books, etc even seven years later I’m still learning new things even after playing the full game of KS more than can be counted.

I just have to say thank you. So very much. This game was my introduction to visual novels. It exploded on FunnyJunk.com when it was released and immediately felt like a cult following throughout the comments sections. It certainly was the first style of vn I had ever touched and the time I have gladly given to the routes and stories you and your companions wove have all been heavenly.

I’ll be reading the rest of the KS related content I can find on this blog, but I also subscribed to you and will be checking your other media/blogs as you are worth the effort.

Just, thank you again. I’m sure you have heard this before but the work you helped to make saved me in so many dark times. I always had the friendly smiles of Yamaku Academy, the breathtaking animations, and the healing tones of the soundtracks brought by Katawa Shoujo to turn to. That made all the difference in the worst moments.

I hope you continue to write, and know that your work is a part of a legend.

    1. Hi there!
Don’t worry, there are plenty more words in my skull so there should be more here in future.

I’ve stepped away from the KS universe in general, but I like to think that there are at least some common themes in my current works.

I’m happy to hear that there are still people that managed to get something deep out of KS

I hope you enjoy the scraps that I’ve posted here! I really like Duet, as it gave me a chance to work with Weee again

  8. Hey Cpl_,

I’m sure as an author it may frustrate you to have so much attention given to just one story, but here I am. Katawa Shoujo was triumphant for all the reasons you know by now. I first came upon it years ago in high school, where I would discuss the characters and their stories with my peers outside the class band room before morning rehearsal. Recently, I’ve gone back to KS, though my interests have changed and my peers are not the same.

KS has important staying power. It reminds us authors that we need to strip away the gimmick and focus on our characters as people, begging us to press some humanity on the page. The story is nearly ten years old, but that same lesson still hits me over the head every time I find myself in a writing rut.

Thank you for helping to make an experience that keeps me writing. If I can come close to providing others with the warmth these characters have allowed me to feel, maybe I’ve done some good.

    1. Yes, it does make me feel like a one-hit wonder, but in a lot of ways, KS was a bit of a wonder in its own right.
I do know that I learned a lot from working with the taskmasters like Aura and Delta. It annoyed me to no end at the time, but I do also feel like it’s sharpened me more than writing on my own for a decade would have.

I will admit that my lack of output since then has been of my own making, but I do at least still enjoy writing.

KS was also very special to a lot of people, and that is also something that I find amazing. That people can still find the game now and find it entertaining is a source of motivation, so thanks at least for saying hi!
